Following My Dream: About Lindy Lou Arts
Growing up in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA, I dreamed of becoming an artist. But life took me in a different direction—as life tends to do—and I spent most of my career in teaching and marketing. In 2021, inspired by a local artist, I revisited my childhood dream and started drawing pastel pet portraits. Now I'm excited to make my debut as a book illustrator with Zuri the Zebra and the Seasons of Giving, published by Journey Institute Press in November 2023. In addition to drawing, I enjoy traveling, kayaking, gardening, volunteering, and spending time with my husband, son, daughter, three dachshunds, two cats, and two turtles at home in Brighton, CO.
I like to be up front about the process I use for transforming clients' photos into pastel portraits. As this gif illustrates, I start by printing the photo lightly (60 - 70% transparency) onto 8x10 pastel paper. The print is so light that I can erase unwanted background elements. Printing the photo allows for an accurate outline and precise placement of the eyes, which is crucial for a recognizable likeness. It also saves time, making it possible for me to keep prices low.
From here, I add black and white ink to accentuate the outline and special features such as the teeth, whiskers, pupils, etc. I then begin adding layers of color, using pan pastels, chalk pastels, and pastel pencils. This is the most time-consuming part of the process, but I love experimenting and seeing what happens when I blend the fur and add splashes of unexpected color. Finally, I touch up the ink that's become dulled by pastel chalk.
Once I'm done with the initial drawing, the client has an opportunity to review a digital image of the portrait and make minor suggestions, such as "please make the eyes darker." When the portrait is complete, I place it in an 11x14 mat (usually in a color chosen by the client), insert it in a clear plastic sleeve, place it between two pieces of cardboard, and mail it safely to the client in a protective bubble wrap envelope. I hope the result will bring my clients joy for years to come!
